CIVIC OPEN HERITAGE DAYS

Diane Howarth,Harold Robinson, Diane Miller

After the excitement of the Short Film Award the friends had a great success with the Auckland Heritage Open days at he Civic.    Reminiscences were shared  with the public whilst they enjoyed Morning tea in the Wintergarden with personalities, including Harold Robinson, (Freda Stark’s partner) Iris Norgrove, (Civic Wurlitzer singer and organist) Lenore Truscott, (dancer in the Wintergarden cabaret),Rona von Zalinsky,(Secretary to Thomas O’Brien), Beverly Quinn, (widow of legendary manager Laurie Quinn), and Cherie Devliotis, (author of the definitive book on dance and dancers in Auckland).
Heritage Week for 2007 begins September 13th.

This was followed by concerts by ensemble members of the Auckland Philharmonia and the NZ Chamber Brass.Escorted tours took place hourly, there were screenings of the 1929 film of the Civic construction, and children painted clay reliefs of the Civic animalia which they could take home -all this was free and the crowds gave testimony to the popularity of this Auckland icon.     Of great value was the presence of two of Thomas O’Brien’s grandchildren at the theatre. Members of the Friends of the Civic committee were present with a table of memorabilia.
